hasbeenpurposefullytitled:CriticalRealismandHumanityintheSocial
Sciences.ArcherianStudies,asitisdevotedtooneofthemostcrucial
issuesoriginatingfromM.S.Archer’sinquiries.Itisalsooneofthe
mainthemesoftheresearchconductedatourDepartment,namely:
theadequacyofsociologytounderstandtheessenceofhumannature,
asemergingfromtheperspectiveofcriticalrealism.
Tetextsofthismonographaddresstheparadigmaticandmeta-
methodologicalproblemswhichcontemporarysociologyfaceswhen
tryingtoprovethatinordertoanswerthequestion:(howshouldit

weneedtoreturntotheontologyofman,societyandculture.Te
presentedstudiesareofarathergeneralcharacter,referringmainlytothe
sphereofphilosophicalanthropologyandsotospeaksociological
anthropology.Tesetwofieldsareutilisedinanattempttoscrutinize
theissuemorethoroughly,byexploringsubjectivityandpower,aswellas
thesignificanceandlegitimacyofreligiouslymotivatedsocialsciences.
Itappearsthatthesocialsciencesarecurrentlystandingat
aparadigmaticcrossroads.Manyofthealluringconceptsofthe1970s
havelosttheirappealandinouropinion,rightlyso.Criticalrealism,
whosebeginningsinsocialsciencesgobacktothesamedecade,hasstood
thetestoftime.Infact,itnowseemstohavegainednewmeaningand
isperhapsmorerelevantthaneverbefore.Westronglybelievethatit
olersgreathopeforthedisorientatedanddisconcertedsocialsciences,
andthatitiswhyitisworthseriousinvestigation.
