thesignificanceandvalueofM.S.Archer’stheory,itsoriginality,its
importantplaceinthemainstreamofphilosophicalreflection,and
thereforeitssignificance,andusefulnessforsociologicalstudies.
KarolWojtyła’sthoughtisalsorecalledinthestudywrittenbyKlau
-
diaŚledzińska,titledHumanityRecovered.SocialTeoriesbetweenIn-
dividualismandTotalism:ConceptionsofKarolWojtyłaandMargaretS.
Archer.Teauthortargetsselectedelementsofboththeories,whichde-
spitetheirslightlydilerentperspectives,arenonethelesscomplementa-
ry,becomingindispensableelementsfordevelopinganintegralconcept
ofman.Telatter,inturn,providestheunderpinningsforsocialtheo-
rieswhichmightprepareanintermediarywaybetweenindividualism
andtotalism.Tecompletionofthesetheoriesistheconceptofpartici-
pation,namely,suchinveteracyoftherelationalpersonalsubjectwith-
insocialstructures,whichenablesself-realisationandthecultivationof

Power.OntheHumanQuestforSelf-DeterminationandSubjectivityin

attempttoconstructasphere,crucialalsofortheBritishsociologist,of
interrelationsbetweenwhatisindividualandwhatiscollectiveandsocial.
Freedom,asafeatureascribedtoasubject,isanecessaryconditionof
subjectivity,whilstpowerisanattributeandconditionoftheexistence
ofsocialsubjects.Tus,wemayconcludethatM.Rembierzaddresses
oneofthemostessentialissuesofthesociologybasedontheparadigm
ofcriticalrealism.
