Introduction
ThecoursebookCześć,jaksięmasz?wasprintedfivetimesinitsedi-
tionbytheUniversitaspublishinghouse.Andthougheacheditionbro-
ughtwithitsomechanges,boththeauthorandthepublisherhave
beenfeelingtheneedformoresubstantial,evenradical,changes.One
ofthelatestadditionshasbeentheteacher’smethodologicalguidein
whichtheauthorshowshowtodividelonglessonsintosmallerteaching
chunksthatcombinereadingpassageswithgrammarandcommunica-
tionnotesalongwithappropriateexercises.Despitethisaid,usershave
complainedabouttheabundanceofmaterialtobecoveredineach
lesson.
Forthisreason,inthislatesteditionofthebooklessonunitsare
reducedbyhalf.Theentirecoursebookhasbeendividedintotwoparts,
whichfurtherresultedindividingeachlessonunitintotwo.Thedivi-
sionisnotmechanicalastheauthorsawtoitthatindividuallessons
weresplitintotwoparts,grammarandcommunication,eachinclud-
ingrelevantcommentaryandactivitiestoaccompanyreadingpassages
andvocabularyineverylesson.
Theneweditionhasbeenpreparedinthenewsituationofteach-
ingPolishasaforeignlanguage.Thismainlyreferstothemetho-
dologiesofteachingandtestingPolish.Inbothfieldsourknowledge
hasgreatlydevelopedsincethemid-1990’swhenthefirsteditionof
thiscoursebookwasbeingprepared.Itisparticularlyconspicuousin
testingthePolishlanguage:in2003thePolishSejmpassedtheActof
AmendmenttothePolishLanguageAct,whichallowedtheMinistry
ofNationalEducationandSporttointroducestateexaminationsof
PolishasaforeignlanguageandtoissuecertificatesofthePolishlan-
guageproficiencyatthreelevels:Threshold(B1),Independent(B2),
andAdvanced(C2).ItisnolessimportantthatcertificationofPolish
asaforeignlanguageisinaccordancewiththestandardsestablished
bytheAssociationofLanguageTestersinEurope(ALTE).Poland,as
representedbyJagiellonianUniversity,becameamemberofthisorga-
nizationin2000.
InaccordancewithuCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReference
forLanguages”,theauthorhasdividedthecoursebookmaterialinsuch
awaythatitsfirstpartisequivalenttolevelA1,thesecondpart–to
