Abstract
Thisarticleisintendedtoprovokereflectionsonexistential
implicationsthatmaybefateofman,when,possibly,willbeinthe
condition,knownasbraindeath.Braindeathisacceptedinmost
countriesasdeath.Atpresentthereispromotedworldwidelythe
attitudetobepotentiallyreadytomakehisorherbodyagifttothe
othersincaseofbeinginsuchacondition.Meanwhile,ofatleast
tenyears,invariousscientificcirclestherehavebeengrowing
criticismoftheconceptofbraindeathonthebasisthatitisnot
alwaysarealdeathofhumanperson.
Therationaletoexplainwhybraindeathisdeatharesurprisingly
problematic.Thestandardrationalethatinbraindeaththerehasbeen
lossofintegrativeunityoftheorganismhasbeenshowntobefalse.
Sofar,thereisthelackofadefensiblerationaleforwhythebrain
deathshouldbeacceptedasdeathitself.Asastimulusforfurther
discussiononbraindeathinthiselaborationtherearepresentedtwo
essentialissues:relationsbetweentheconceptofbraindeathand
transplantation,andbraindeathastheaporiaforChristianChurches.
Lastpartofthearticleisdirectlyfocusedontheproblem,expressed
bythequestion,whetherbraindeathisrealdeathoritisjust
aconditionof„uncertainnon-existence”.
