Introduction
Afterthebeginningofthe1989breakthroughtheconceptofCentralandEastern
Europe(CEE)becamewidelyusedassynonymforthegroupoftencountriesfrom
theformerEasternBlocaspiringtoEUmembership.Atroubledhistoricalexperience
oflongforeigndomination,fragilestatehoodandexperienceofsocialistregimesare
sharedbyCentralandEasternEuropeancountriesgivingthisregionitsdistinctive
tone.Thesimilaritiescannot,however,concealthedifferences,asoverhistorythe
commontransformationsweremouldedbythelocalparticularitiesdistincthisto-
ries,differentculturesanddissimilarmentalitiesofeachcountry.
TherecentaccessionofCentralandEasternEuropeancountriestotheEUwas
yetanothercommonexperienceoftheregion,initiatingchainofalterationsatvari-
ousdimensionsofpolitical,legal,socialandculturallivesofthenewmemberstates.
Thevolumebeforeyouisanattempttopresentandassesschangesresultingfromthe
accessionandEuropeanintegrationprocesses,graspingbothsimilaritiesanddiffer-
encesinthecountriesoftheregion.Inthisrespectthearticlescollectedinthebook
tthewiderresearchagendacalledEuropeanisation.
Europeanisationhasbecomeaveryfashionableterminsocialsciencesoverthe
lastdecade.Nonetheless,theconceptcontinuestobechallengedandcontested(Olsen
2002;Flockhart2010).Areviewofliteratureindicatesavarietyofmeaningsattached
toit,variouslevelsofanalysesaswellasarangeofcontextsinwhichitisapplied
(GrazianoandVink2007;FeatherstoneandRadaelli2003).Initiallyitaimedtograsp
thechangestakingplaceintheoldmemberstates;however,itwasquicklyandfruit-
fullyadoptedtodescribechangesintheCEEregion.However,beforepresentingthe
applicationoftheterminresearchonchangesintheCEEregion,wewillrstbriefly
reviewtheattemptstodefinetheconceptofEuropeanisation.
