TheimpactofthememberstatesontheshapeoftheforeignEuropeanpolicyis
alsoacentralthemeofthearticlebyNathanielCopseyandKarolinaPomorska.The
authorsattempttoassesstheabilityofamemberstatetoexercisepowerandinflu-
enceontheEU.ThearticlepresentsacasestudyfocusingonPoland’sattemptsto
shapetheEuropeanNeighbourhoodPolicy.Thepowerandinfluenceofacountry
intheEuropeanUnionisoperationalisedbyassessingthecountry’sperformancein
differentdimensionsintensityofpoliticpreference,skillofalliancebuilding,ad-
ministrativecapacity,persuasiveadvocacyandreceptivenessofothermemberstates.
TheassessmentofthePolishpowerandinfluenceontheEUinthecontextofthe
EuropeanNeighbourhoodPolicyprovedittobeinsignificant.
ThelasttextincludedinthispartofthebookisanarticlebyMartinDangerfield
presentingthechangingroleoftheVisegradGroup.Thissubregionalgroup,consist-
ingofinitiallythreecountries(Czechoslovakia,PolandandHungary)andlaterfour
(CzechRepublic,Slovakia,PolandandHungary),wascreatedwithanaimtofacili-
tatetheEUaccessionforitsmemberstates.Thearticlegivesabriefaccountofthis
stageofthegroup’sdevelopment,focusingmoreonthequestionabouttheroleofthe
groupinthepost-accessionperiodintheenlargedEurope.
Thecollectionwaspreparedaspartofthewiderproject"Europeanisationand
GovernanceinCentralandEasternEurope”ledbytheCentreforEuropeanStudies
oftheJagiellonianUniversityincooperationwithARENACentreforEuropean
StudiesattheUniversityofOslo.Theprojectwascompletedwithsupportgranted
byIceland,LiechtensteinandNorwaybymeansofco-financingfromtheEuropean
EconomicAreaFinancialMechanismandtheNorwegianFinancialMechanismas
partoftheScholarshipandTrainingFundfrom2008to2011.Onthisoccasionwe
wouldliketothankourpartnersfromARENACentreforEuropeanStudiesfortheir
involvementandsupportateachstageoftheprojectandforcontributiontothis
volume.WewouldliketoexpressourspecialgratitudetoProfessorHans-JörgTrenz,
