TeproblematicsofthelOther’hasbecomepivotalindiagnosingcontem-

poraneityandreﬂectinguponsocialchangeinEurope.Testudyofprejudice

towardsothernessisofprimeimportancetoourcontinent;itisalsovitalinthe

resistanceandchallengeagainstphobias.TeOtherisviewedwithsuspicion

acrossEurope;yetIhaveselectedmyregions,PolandandEasternEurope,

asspecial,intensivecases.Itisurgenttoopposethepoliticalandvisualrep-

resentationofthehatredofalterityandtotheorizeandpractisehospitality.

Inthecontextofnationalismsandfundamentalisms,hospitalityseemsto

constituteanethicalandculturaltherapy.Prejudicesmakepeopledescend

intomassacres.Asphobiasleadtoviolenceanddeath,itisapressingproblem

todealwiththem.Oursshouldbealandofhospitalitywhereallhumansub-

jectsarewelcometolive,travelandwork.Teissueforthefutureofourcivil

societyishowtoproduce-insteadofxenophobia-hospitality(philoxenia).

Overall,myintentionistoreclaimthewordlhospitality’fromthetour-

istindustry,sometimesreferredtoasthehospitalityindustry,inorderto

followanintellectualandsocialtradition(fromantiquitythroughKantto

Derrida,Kristeva,andBauman)inusingthewordhospitalityasanethical

andculturalnotion.Terefore,Ielaborateonmyphilosophyofotherness

andhospitalityinrelationtothesephilosophical,psychoanalyticandliter-

arytraditions.InchaptertwoIpresentmyunderstandingofalterityand

hospitalitythroughtheprismofvisualarts.

Haveweachieveddemocracy?Ourdemocraticdreamsareunfulﬁlled.

Horror,whichisviolencetovulnerabilities,prevails.Hereandnowweare

painfullylackingindemocracy,thisformoflifełTeonlyhopeliesin

civilsocietyanditshospitality;wemuststruggleforthisutopia-inaction.

Contemporarycrueltiesandcommonalitiesareanalyzedintheexamplesof

theartandsocietiesofEasternEurope,inparticularthoseofPoland.My

aimistoexplorepolitical,socialandartisticrepresentationsofotherness

wherehospitalityandhostility(collapsedintheDerrideanneologismof

hostipitalité)arethekeyphilosophemes,themaintravellingconcepts;perhaps

hospitalityconstitutesacurefortheevilofourtime.Phenomenological,
