Tismonographwillexaminetheculturalrepresentationsofnational,

ethnicandreligiousminorities,aswellastheLGBTQcommunity,refugees

andotherimmigrantsinPolishpoliticsandculture,particularlyinthevisual

arts.AvarietyofprejudicesconvergeontheseStrangerswhoaredevoidof

subjectivityandvisibility.Terefore,itisimportanttoexaminetheprob-

lematicnotionsofalterity,visibilityandhospitality-inordertoempower

theexcluded.Mymonographaimstoexaminetheintolerancedirectedat

supposedstrangersandattemptstoﬁghtthisintolerance,particularlyasan

oppositionisstrengtheningagainstprejudicedperceptions.Anexamination

ofapproachestoothernessisrelevanttothevarietyofdisciplineswhichwill

informmymulti-disciplinaryapproach:politicalphilosophy,thehistoryof

ideas,culturalstudies,Europeanstudies,visualcultureandarthistory,critical

practices,psychoanalysis,genderandqueerstudiesandhumangeography.In

thiswayIwillconstructthepost-disciplinaryfoundationsuponwhichamore

sophisticatedandculturallyawareunderstandingoftheOtherwithinand

withoutcanbeconstructed.Tiswillinformpolicydebatesregardingsexism,

homophobia,anti-Semitism,andotherculturalandsocialintolerances.My

focusisonthepictureoftheStrangeratatimewhenEuropeiswitnessing

theriseofanuncivilsocietywithitssexist,racist,anti-Semitic,homo-and

xenophobicideologiesandiconographies.Iexploretheideasandimagesofthe

Otherproducedbythefarright,aswellasinitiativesthatopposethemincivil

societyandinthearts-andaimtoprovideaframeworkbywhichHuncivil

society”canbechallenged.Tekeyquestionis:Howtoputintopracticeand

spreadthephilosophyofhospitality?Tisisthecentralpreoccupationofthis

study.Teoriginalnatureofmybookisbasedonitsinterdisciplinarycharacter,

connectingpoliticalphilosophy,genderstudies,andverbal-visualculture,but

alsoonitssocialoutreach.Iendeavortocombineacademicstudywithsocial

andculturalactivismforhumanrights,synthesizingresearchwithaction.

Inter-disciplinaryperspectiveslieatthecoreofmyapproach.Itisaround

thediversewaysinwhichothernessisdeﬁnedandunderstoodthatthis

interpretationwillconverge.Teaimhereistolearnfromsuchdiversityin

ordertocreateanewbodyofpolicy-relevantknowledge.Temulti-andinter-

disciplinarityofthisapproachisdeliberatelyheterogeneousanddynamic,

butwillprovideasystematicmethodforapproachingtheissuesinquestion.

inpraxi.JacquesDerrida,byhisverycoinagehostipitalité,emphasizedthe

equivocalcharacterofhospitality.
