Andthisissueisnotrestrictedtoourcontemporarytimes.Regardless
oftheeraandparticularquestions(aswellasthecurrentthreats,suchas
atypeof“misstatementsoffreedom,”etc.),theessenceofmanalways
remainsthesame:freedomsuspendedbetweengoodandevil,between
lifeanddeath.

Freedom—agreatgiftofGod,indeliblefeatureofour
similaritytotheCreatorandourbiggesttask,makesourfatebothwon-
derfuland“Divine”(imageandlikeness)aswellasunsettledandendan-
geredinmanyways.Christianity—followingGod—respectsfreedomto
itsultimateconsequencesandneverofersanycheap,fraudulent,quasi-
magicalcertaintyofsalvation.5ThisistheessenceofChristianthinking
andrealisminthisrespect:freedom—withallitsunique,irreplaceable
beautyanddrama—isreal.Therefore,intheprofundityofthesoulthat
theBiblecalls“heart,”themanisalwaysinneedofsalvation.6Heneeds
help,heneedsGod,and—letusrefertoanadagebyBenedictXVI,
oneofhismostfamousones—“alltheanswersthatdonotreachupto
Godaretoomyopic.”7Freedom,thiscrucialspaceofhumanityinwhich
thedefinitiveisdecidedupon,cannotbedeceived.Itcannotbefilledby
thingsthatdonotreachuptothedefinite.
