WhatdoesasupporteroftheEnlightenment-liberalconceptoffree-
domexpect?ProbablyheorsheexpectsmoreorlessthingsthatKarl
Marx“definedasafullvisionoffreedom,”theresultsofliberation,rev-
olution,andanewsocialawareness:“…huntinthemorning,fishin
theafternoon…criticismafterdinner,justasIhaveamind…”27Canit
bethatbanalaccordingtothemajorideologistoffreedom?Toshedan
oceanofbourgeoisandproletarianbloodtobeabletogofishing?Free-
domasanopportunitytodoeverythingthatonewishestodo,butonly
thingsthatonewishesalone?Thisisonlywillfulness,nothingmore,and
itsdestinationisonlyanarchy…28Isitpossiblethatideasreachedtothe
cobblesandtheessenceoftheEnlightenment-liberalfreedominEurope
is“tohavevacation”andthat“freedomsmellsofpetrol”?InAugust2011
protestsagainsteconomicausteritymeasurescametoahaltinAthens,
MadridsawbeginningofprotestsagainstthepopecomingtotheWorld
YouthDays,therewereriotsonthestreetsofLondonaccompaniedby
destructionofthecitycausedbygreedandanarchicsenseofpowerover
goodandevil,lusttodestroy
,typeof“freedom,”whichlovesdestruction.
ButthecolumnistofGazetaWyborczadefendshisEnlightenment-liberal
pointofview:
Idonotbelieveinsimpleexplanationsthatseekreasonsofriotseitherin
multiculturalismoratheisation[anythingbutthelatter!—J.Sz.].Young
peoplelikethethrillofemotionsprovidedbyrobberyofshopsandset-
