[…]freedomissomethingelsethanindeterminism.Itisaparticipation,not
aparticipationinaspecificsocialstructure,butaparticipationinthebeing
itself.Thismeansthatoneistheownerofone’sbeing,notitssubject.Only
onthisbasisoneisabletodescribeGodasthePersonifiedFreedom,since
Hepossesseshisbeingcompletely.Wecanalsosaythatfreedomisidentical
withthehighlandsofbeing,whichhowevermakessenseonlywhenthese
highlightsofbeingareindeed“thehighest”:thegiftofloveandgiving
oneselfinlove.Therefore,thepedagogyoffreedomisaboutleadingtothe
highlightsofbeing,upbringingtobeing,upbringingtolove,andthere-
foreleadingtowardθείωσις
ʹ,towarddeification.This“beinglikeGod”is
undoubtedlyalsotheobjectiveofradical,emancipationpedagogueswho
postulateunlimited,divinefreedomandfullnessofdisposition.Theobjec-
tiveisvalidhere,onlytheimageofGodisincorrect.33
Yetanotherlongerquotationseemstobenecessaryhere:
[…]inanarchicsenseoffreedommanwouldliketobecomeGod,whoas
amatteroffactdoesnotexistoutsidehimself.DoesrealismofChristian
conceptoffreedommeanthatmangiveshimselfup,comesbacktohisown
definitenessandwantstoremainonlyaman?Notatall.Inthelightofthe
ChristianexperienceofGoditbecomesclearthattheunlimitedfreedom
ofomni-knowledgeandomnipotenceismodelleduponanidol,notGod.
TrueGodisaself-bondinginathree-dimensionalloveandthereforeapure
freedom.ThevocationofthemanistobeanimageofthisGod,tobecome
likeHim.Manhasnotbeeninvinciblyclosedinhisfinitude.Firstofall,he
mustforsurelearntoacknowledgethisfinitude.Forheshouldacknowl-
edge,thatheisnotself-containedorautonomous.Hemustrenouncefalse-
hood,lackofreferencesanddiscretion.Hemustaccepthisshortage,the
others,theirpresence,thecreation,limitationanddirectionofhisown
existence.Whoeverisabletochooseonlybetweenpreferences,isnotfree
yet.Anindividualisfreewhen,alonghisactions,hedrawssolelyfromhis
interioranddoesnotneedtosubduetoanyexternalpressureanymore.
Andanindividualisfree,becausehebecameasonewithhisnature,one
withthetruthitself.Forhewhoisonewiththetruth,nolongeroperates
accordingtoexternalrequirementsandnecessities;inhimtheessence,
desireanddeedbecomeone.Inthiswaymanisabletoreachtheindefinite
inthefinite,unitewithhimandacknowledgingtheboundariesbe
infinitehimself.SofinallyitbecomesclearagainthattheChristiandoc-
trineoffreedomisnotameticulousmoralisation.Itisaccompaniedbyan
all-embracingvisionofman.34

thequestionontheessenceoffreedom,letusemphasiseitonceagain:
