1.INTRODUCTION
Electrictractionisunderstoodastheapplicationofanelectricdriveintheve-
hicledrive(objectinmotion).Thetypeandparametersofamotorusedinadrive
influencethetractioncharacteristicofavehicle,itsperformance,functioningand
operatingcosts(relatednotonlytothevehicle,butalsototheelementsandco-
operatingsystemsofelectromechanicalandpowerelectronicssystemsofenergy
conversionandsupply,systemsofautomatics,controlandsignalling).Inasolu-
tionwithanexternalsupplyofelectricenergytoavehicleusingaspecialsetof
conductors-thecatenary,suchasystemiscalledasystemofnetworktraction
(Fig.1.1).Whenthesourceofelectricenergyisplacedonthevehicle,suchasolu-
tioniscalledautonomous(independent)traction.Acommontypeofautonomous
tractionisDiesel-electrictraction,whereelectricenergyisproducedonboardof
avehicleduetotheapplicationofafuelenginethatiscoupledwithagenerator
supplyingenergytoelectricmotorsofavehicledrive.Adiagramofconnections
