APPLICATIONOFTHEFROBENIUSTHEOREM
TODETERMINATIONOFPOTENTIALSWITH
THEIRGRADIENTSORTHOGONALTOVECTORFIELDS
Theproblemoffindingpotentialsofthevectorfieldthosegradientsareorthogonalto
thegivenvectorfieldsisformulatedandsolved.Thesolutiontotheproblemisbasedonthe
Frobeniustheorem.Itisshownthattheproblemhasasolutionifandonlyifthedistribution
spannedonthevectorfieldsisinvolutive.Aprocedureforfindingofthedesiredpotentials
isproposedanddemonstratedonanexampleoffindingonepotentialfortwogivenvector
fields.
1.INTRODUCTION
Inrecentyearsthemethodsofdifferentialgeometryhavebeenappliedto
analysisandsynthesisofnon-linearsystems[1,2,6].Usingthesemethodssome
knownresultsforlinearsystemshavebeenextendedfornon-linearsystems.
Theproblemofgloballinearizationofnon-linearsystemshasbeeninvestigated
inpapers[3-5].
InthisnotetheFrobeniustheoremwillbeappliedtosolvetheproblemof
findingpotentialsofthevectorfieldwhosegradientsareortogonaltothegiven
vectorfields.Necessaryandsufficientconditionsfortheexistanceofsolutionto
theproblemwillbeestablishedandaprocedureforfindingthesolutiontothe
problemwillbeproposed.
