Eventhoughtherearenumeroustechnicalenergyefficiencyandsustainabilitymeasuresex-

Michiganwhichwasparticularlyfocusedhowtoreduceenergyconsumptionproviding
recommendationstoimproveproductivityandsaveenergy-bothgasandelectricity-inthe
plants’productionprocesses.ThisprojectwasfundedthroughDr.AnatoleS.andPamela
D.DekabanFellowshipwithintheCollegeofEngineeringoftheUniversityofMichigan.
TheprojectwasperformedincollaborationwithProfessorArvindAtreya(MechanicalEn-
gineering)andasmallteamofgraduatestudents.

Theworkgivesanoverviewofsustainabilityandenergyissuesintegratedinsustainablemanu-

andactionsforachievingsustainableenergy.Therefore,therelevantconceptsonenergyeffi-
ciency,sustainabilityandtheirassessmentbasedonindicatorsarehighlighted.
Thismonographfocusesontheevaluationoftechnologiesandmanufacturingprocessesusing
variousassessmentmethodsthatmaximizeeconomicreturns,minimizeenvironmentimpacts
andmeetsocialexpectations.Itbringstogethertheexpertiseofrespectedacademicsinthe
fieldofsustainablemanufacturingoverthelastdecade,offeringanoverviewofsustainability
assessmentmethodologiesandassociatedindicatorsusedinthisfieldwhichwerecombinedin
thedevelopmentofacomprehensivemethodtocoverthemajorsustainableaspectsandissuesof
assessingandmeasuringtheenergysustainabilityinmanufacturingwhileconsideringnumerous
dimensionssuchaseconomic,environmentalandsocial.Allthesefactorstogethercouldbe
usefulandapplicableinanewway.
Thisisthetopicofthecurrentworkwhichisbasedontheresultsofresearchingenergypattern,
efficientproductionsystemsforsustainability,andpolicyprovidingmultidimensionalperspec-
tivesandknowledgenecessarytoachievesustainableenergy.
Thisworklaysdownthefoundationsofindustrialenergyanalysis.Thiscontributionisplaced
inthebroadercontextofthemodernparadigmofsustainability,andtheirimplicationsforas-
sessmentindustrialfacilitieswithregardstoenergyconsumptionandsustainabilityissuesare
discussed.
Thismonographhighlightstheimportanceofmultidisciplinaryapproachesthatintegrateenergy
issuetosustainabilityefficiencyandtechnologicalperspectivestosolvecurrentproblemsofen-
ergyefficiencyproblemsandtopromotethedevelopmentofsustainableenergyinSMEsman-
ufacturing.Thispublicationundertakesacomprehensiveorahigh-leveloverviewofexisting
studiesinthisareawithregardtosustainablemanufacturingassociatedwithenergytechnologies
inSMEsintermsofenergy-relatedassessment,drivers,implementationbarriersandenergypol-
icies,opportunities,aswellasoptionforassessments,sothatpossiblemeasurescanbeidentified
