assurance(QA)*.Toachieveasafeworkingenvironment,itiscrucialtorecognize
safetyhazards.Areasofsafetythathavetobetakenintoconsiderationincludebiologic
safety,electricalsafety,chemicalsafety,firesafetyandradiationsafety.
GeneralRequirementsforPersonalSafety
inaLaboratoryArea:
•Laboratoriesmustrestrictaccesstothelaboratoryarea.Visitorstothelaboratory
musthaveknowledgeoflaboratorysafetyrules.
•Laboratorycoatsorgownsshouldbeworninthelaboratoryandshouldbe
completelybuttoneduptoreducetransferofmicroorganisms.
•Noeating,drinking,orsmokingshouldoccurinthelaboratoryarea.
•Drinksandfoodshouldnotbeplacedintherefrigeratorusedforlaboratory
items.
•Nothingshouldbeplacedinyourmouthincludingpipettes,pencils,fingers,etc.
•Noapplicationofcosmeticsshouldoccurinthelaboratory.
•Shoesshouldbeworn–noopen-toedshoes.
•Asbestosglovesmustbeusedtohandlehotglass.
•Alwayswearrubbergloveswhenworkingwithpatient’sspecimens.
•Washyourhandswithsoapandwaterbeforeleavingthelaboratoryarea.
•Peoplewithcontactlensesareadvisednottoweartheminthelaboratory.
•Longhairshouldbetiedbacktoavoidcontaminatedmaterialormoving
instrumentalparts.
•Centrifugesshouldnotbeoperatedwithoutcovers.
•Glasswarethatisbrokenorchippedmustbediscardedproperly.
•Decontaminatethelaboratoryareaimmediatelyifbiohazardmaterialisspilled.
