SAFETYINTHECLINICAL

Anyclinicalormicrobiologylaboratoryisapotentiallyhazardousplace.However,itis
theattitudeofthepersonnelthatmakesalaboratoryasafeorunsafeplacetowork.It
hasbeenestablishedthatignoranceandcarelessnessarethetwomostcommoncauses
oflaboratoryaccidents.Studiesoflaboratory-associatedinfectionshaveindicatedthat
mostsuchinfectionsdonotresultfromknownexposuresoraccidentsbutinstead
fromroutinehandlingofbiologicorpatientspecimens.
TefollowingrulestogetherwiththegeneralruleslistedinsectionKGeneral
RequirementsforPersonalSafetyinaLaboratoryArea’shouldbethenormforall
clinicalormicrobiologylaboratories:
Laboratoryandsupportpersonnelmusthaveknowledgeofthebiologicalrisksin
theclinicalormicrobiologylaboratoryandactaccordingly.
BecauseofthespecialrisksassociatedwithAIDSallclinicalspecimensshould
betreatedasiftheycontainHIV.Latexorvinylglovesshouldbewornwhenever
handlingspecimensofanykind.
Masksmustbewornanytimethereisapossibilityofgeneratinganaerosolduring
specimenpreparation.
Effectiveproceduresfordecontaminatinginfectiousmaterialsorwastes(i.e.
specimens,syringesandneedles,inoculatedmedia,bacterialcultures,tissue
cultures,experimentalanimals,glassware,instruments,andsurfaces)mustbein
placeandbepractisedwithoutcompromise.
A5.25%(fullstrength)chlorinebleachsolutionisrecommendedfor
decontaminatingspilledinfectiousmaterial.
