Introduction
InFinland,thebasicteachinghasbotheducationalandlearning
function.Teaimistosupportthestudents’growthasindividuals
andasmembersofsociety,aswellastoteachthenecessaryknowledge
andskills.Basiceducationprovidestoallthesameeligibilityforfurther
studiesanditisfreeofcharge.Inadditiontoteacher’sbooksandother
teachingmaterials,asalsoothertoolsandmaterialsareprovidedfree
ofcharge.
Pupilsareserved,duringeveryschoolday,afreefullmeal,andunder
certainconditions,freetransporttoandfromaschool.Pupilshavealso
therighttogetfreepupilwelfareservicesrequiredforparticipationin
education.Pupilswithdisabilitieshavetherighttoobtainfreeofcharge
alltheaidsandassistantservices.Compulsoryeducationforchildren
andyoungpeopleinprimaryeducationisusuallygiveninelementary
school.Amongothers,highschoolsforadultsandfolkhighschools
provideeducationforpersonsovertheageof18.
Primaryschoolincludesgrades1-9,anditisintendedfortheen-
tireagegroup(7-16-year-olds).Teclassteacher,asarule,givesclass
instructionduringtheinitialsixyearsofteaching.Teclassteacher
teachesallormostoftheschoolsubjects.Treetop-classeducationis
primarilysubjectteaching.InFinland,thereareabout3,200schools
thatprovideprimaryeducation.Temajorityofschoolsarecommunal.
