Introduction
TheideaforthisbookcameaboutasaresultoftheICTGuidesproject,
whichwasfundedbytheErasmus+programme.1Theprojectwascarriedout
in2015–2018inGothenburg(Sweden),Berlin(Germany),Madrid(Spain)and
Shefeld(UnitedKingdom).Thecitiesidentifedfortheprojectallhavearela-
tivelyhighpercentageofyoungschoolstudentswithimmigrantbackgrounds.
ThisgroupofEuropeansinparticularareatriskofearlyschoolleaving,andare
over-representedintermsofunemployment.
Thebookaddressestheissueofinformationandcommunicationtechnol-
ogy(ICT)useinaneducationalenvironment,andpresentsresearchresultsfrom
theICTGuidesproject.InordertodiscusshowICTcanbeusedasameans
topreventearlyschoolleavingamongimmigrantyouth,thisbookexploresthe
literatureonhowlearningcanbeunderstoodintheintergenerationalcontext
(Chapter1);whatthechallengesareinpreventingearlyschoolleaving(Chapter
2),andtheprospectsforICTineducation(Chapter3).Finally,wepresentthe
fndingsofanempiricalstudyonintergenerationallearningwiththeuseofinfor-
mationandcommunicationstechnology(Chapter4).
Asreports2onyouthinEuropeshow,youngimmigrantsaremostatrisk
ofsocialexclusion.Employmentisastrongprotectivefactoragainsttheriskof
poverty,and–asidentifedintheEU2020strategy–oneofthemostimportant
targetsforasmart,sustainableandinclusiveEurope.Immigrantyouthssuńer
fromhavinganincompleteeducation,partlybecauseoftheeconomiccrisisin
Europe,andpartlybecauseofthemilitaryconflictsandstrifeinplacessuchas
SyriaandAfghanistan.
