quite,laterturnedintoachurch,thecastle,etc.Othersareorientedtowardsthe
presentationoffolkactivities:blacksmith,weaving,mining,etc.
Thecampus1issaidtobebothatoolforcommunitydevelopmentandacentre
forinternationalisation,withimportantandwidelyrecognisedresearchandheritage
networks,especiallyinthedomainoftheIslamiccultureandpresenceinIberia.
Workshops,researchandconservationlaboratories,coursesandpost-degreestudies
areregularlycarriedout,oftenunderthecoveringofprotocolsestablishedwithuni-
versitiesandresearchcentres,intheMediterraneanbasin,mostlyinitsAfricanside.
Theeducationalandcitizendimensionalsoconstitutesanappreciatedbrandmarks
ofthiscampus.Formanyobservers,Mértolawouldingreatmeasurebecondemned
toisolationwithoutthedynamicimagegivenbyalltheserecourses.Infact,apart
fromtheimpactinscientificcommunities,itisnotabusivetoconsiderthatmostof
thetouristsvisitingMértolatodayareinsomedegreeattractedbythehistoricaland
ethnographicheritagevalues,whichthecampushasconsistentlypromotedfromits
creationin1978uptonow.
MuseumofRurality(Image3).Thismuseumis,tosomeextent,similarto
theprecedent,eveniffocusedbasicallyinrecentfolkcultures,notinarchaeology.
Infactitwasingreatmeasurecreatedunderthesameglobalconception,bythe
actionofprofessionalswithcommonorigins.Itisalsoapolynucleatedandfairlytra-
ditionalmuseum2,locatedclosetoMértola,intheneighbouringcountyofCastro
Verdearegionknownbyitstraditionaltranshumancepathslinkingthelowaltitude
mountains(Kserra”)ofAlgarvetotheAlentejoplain.Thecentralbuilding,placedin
thevillageofEntradas(Kentrances”,theplacewhereherdspassedintheirannual
movement),iscomposedbyexhibitions(mostlyethnographic),anareadevotedto
oralityandmusicaltraditions,whereespecialattentionisgiventotheparticularlocal
violacampaniça(countrysideviola)andseverallogisticspaces(projectionroom,docu-
mentationcentre,etc.).OneofthemostfrequentedroomsistheTaberna,thetypical
assemblingplace,traditionallymostlyformen,wheremenandwomenalike,meetto
drinkandsingthecantealentejano.Instillsmallervillages,othercommunityspaces
arepolesofthemuseum,usedtoassemblepeople(ex:Aivadoscommunityvillage).
Ingeneral,thismuseumisknownbytheimportancegiventoimmaterialherit-
ageandactsasadevelopmentalresourceorjustameetingpointwherepeoplecome
togethertopreparefestivitiesandothercommoncelebrations.
