intheWestbecomingendangeredbytheboomingIslamiccivilisation-are
comprisedinthefirstpartofthework.
Anotherissuediscussedinthebookistheempiricalstudyoftheproblemsof
thecriminalfamily(togetherwiththepresentationoftheauthors’ownresearch
onasampleofjuvenileofenders-Chapters5,8and9).Tefamilyisendan-
gerednotonlybytheprocessesofthedesacralisationofthemaritalbondand
pluralisationofthestylesoffamilylife,whichbringaboutthedisappearanceof
thetraditionalmodelofamarriedheterosexualcouplewithchildren.Regard-
lessofwhetheritisthefamilydefinedbythetwentieth-centurysociologyor
bypostmodernsociology,itissubjecttovarioussocialpathologies(including
crimeandaddiction),whoseexplosionhasbeenfacilitatedbytheprocessesof
urbanisation,socialatomisation,thedisappearanceofsocialcontrol,transfor-
mationsinthelabourmarket,thespreadofdrugs,andthealienationoffamily
membersfromtherealandintothevirtualworld(thepopularityofnewtech-
nologies).Amonganumberofsymptomsofthecontemporarytransformations
ofthefamilyonaglobal,European,orPolishscale,wecansee,amongothers,
anincreaseintheintensityofthepathologicalordeviantphenomenainthe
lifeofthemodernfamily.3Violence,alcoholism,andcrimeinthefamily,which
areconsideredtobesocialills,generallyvictimisechildren,who,asaresultof
thesenegativephenomena,aredriventocrimeandaddiction.Teanalysisof
thesocialdeterminantsofturningtocrime(familypathologies,delinquentpeer
groups,absentfathers,andliberalandrejectingparentingstylesofupbringing)
aswellasadiscussionofsocialdeterminantsofcriminaldesistanceasaresultof
significant,positivelifeeventsinthebiographiesofcriminals(bothjuvenileand
adults)aredealtwithinPart2ofthework.Part3comprisesissuesrelatedto:the
placementoftheresearchoncrimeanditspreventioninthesystemofsciences,
areviewofthelatestPolishcriminologicalliterature,definingnewphenomena
inthefieldofcriminalpolicy(restorativejustice),andthedescriptionofselected
elementsofthecriminalpolicytowardsjuveniledelinquentsimplementedin
selectedcountriesoftheNorthAtlanticculture.
