anylingeringhopesthatthetwobiologicalparentswillonedayreconcile.”24Te
situationofnumerouschildrenlivinginsuchblendedfamiliesisnotsomething
toenvy.Teyaredoomedtolivewithsuccessivestepfathersorstepmothers.
Teirlifetakesplaceinnumerousplaces,wherenumerousdecisionsaremade
beyondtheirfeelingsandchoices;theytravelbetweenthenewfamiliesoftheir
fathersandmothers.Formanyofthem,itisatraumaticexperienceofliving
inatleasttwoplacesatthesametime.25Giddensmentionsonemoretermto
definereconstructedfamilies(extendedfamilies),thatisbinuclearfamilies.Tis
termemphasisesthefactthattwohouseholds,emergingasaresultofadivorce,
stillconstituteonefamilystructure,butwithhighlycomplexinterpersonalrela-
tions,underspecifiedrulesofbehaviour,multipliedoutlooksofitsmembers,and
numerousothersorepointsresultingfromnewrelationsbetweenstepmothers
andstepfathers,andtheirstepsonsandstepdaughters.26
Tereareother,alternativeformsofmarital-familylife,which,however,are
difculttoclassifyinaccordancewiththecriteriaoutlinedabove.Namely:
1.Asubstitutefamily,27whichinthelightofthePolishlawmaybecomposedof
spousesorapersonnotremaininginamaritalrelationship(art.41);28
2.Singlelifeofadultchildrenlivinginacommonhouseholdwiththeirparents.
TelattermodeloffamilylifeisarealplagueinEurope.AccordingtoEuro-
statdataforMay2014,youngpeopleinCroatiamoveoutoftheirfamilyhomes
attheageof33,andinSpainandGreeceattheageof29.Tebestsituationin
thisrespectisobservedinSweden,wherethisrateis19.9.InPoland,asaresult
oftheinabilitytobecomefinanciallyindependent,40%ofpeopleaged25-34
livewiththeirparents.29
Inatraditionalfamilymodel,anindividualperformsanancillaryrolein
relationtothefamily;heorsheservesthefamily.Tefatherprovidedforthe
family,themotherusedtotakecareforthechildrenandthehusbandand
securedtheiremotionalneeds,whilethechildrenweretobeasecurityfor
oldparents(pensionandretireebenefitsaretheinventionofthenineteenth
century!).Tefamilyusedtocreateacollectiveentity,withinwhicheveryone
couldplayastrictlydefinedroleinaccordancewithaclearscenario,repeated
inthenextgeneration.Inthepost-modernfamily,eachfamilymemberseems
