ThisbookisanattempttoreconstructtheeffortsoftheancientIndianthinkers
inunderstandingtheworldandthemselves.Theyexpressedtheirconceptsinatext
calledtheÇgveda,whichisanalysedinthisbook.TheÇgvedaistheearliestIndian
compositionandfundamentaltoitslaterculture.Itisalsoanimportanttestimony
forthebeginningsofIndianphilosophyandforhumanphilosophicalthinkingin
general.
1.TheÇgveda
TheÇgveda(RV)isacollectionofpoeticalhymnscomposedduringthesecond
halfofthesecondmillenniumBCintheearliestformofSanskrit.Itsauthors,who
calledthemselvesAryaorArya,belongedtotheeasternIndo-Iranianbranchoftribes
speakingIndo-Europeanlanguages,whograduallysettledonthePanjabplateau
duringthesecondmillenniumB.C1.AtitspeaktheÇgvediccivilisationextended
fromtheKabulRivertotheGag(Witzel1995a:93).
