Iwouldliketoemphasisethatrealitystillremainsinthestateofinternal
contradiction:functionaldiscriminationofbothaspectsmarksthebeginningofthe
cognitiveprocess.Thefactthattheyarecalleddarknessexpressestheinabilityto
cognisethem,bothbecauseoftheirhomogeneityandbecauseoftheabsenceof
anylightwhichcouldrendercognitionpossible.Thisexpressionevokesmapping
CognitionIsSeeing,universal–asSweetser(1990)hasshown–fortheIndo-
-Europeanlinguisticcommunity:whenitisdark,cognitioncannotbeperformed.
Aswewillsee,theearliercosmogoniesconceivetheprecreativestateinasimilar
way:asadarkstateinwhichcognitionisimpossible.Theyare,however,notso
elaboratedasintheNdsadtya.Usuallytheydonotdiscerntheprecreativestateof
realityfromthestatescharacteristicforthebeginningsofcreation.Wecantreat
