Myotonicdystrophy
Myotonicdystrophytype1(DM1),themostcommonformofmuscular
dystrophyinadults(1/8,000individuals),isaninherited,autosomaldominant
diseasecharacterizedmainlybymyotonia(sustainedmusclecontraction),
progressivemuscleweakness(especiallyofdistallimbs,theneck,andtheface),
musclewasting,andvariablemultisystemicfeatures.DM1belongstoagrowing
groupofgeneticdiseasescausedbyexpansionofunstablemicrosatellite
repeats.DM1wasshowntobecausedbytheexpandedCTGrepeat
inthe3'-untranslatedregion(3'UTR)ofthedystrophymyotonic-proteinkinase
(DMPK)geneinchromosome19q[14].
