Abstract:Thepresentarticleattemptstoshedlightonthesourcesofphilosophi-
calcriticismofearlyGreeceandontheoriginsofthecriticalattitudeadopted
bythethinkersoftheperiod.Aboveall,however,reflectionspresentedherebyare
meanttoserveasabackdropforanalysesofamuchbroaderscope.Thestudyseeks
toidentifythedefiningcharacteristicsofearlyGreekcriticism,uponwhichbasis
theauthorputsforthapropositionforageneraltypologyofitsforms.Complement-
ingthepresentcommentsisabriefdiscussionofthesuggestedtypesofphilosophical
criticisminlightoftheviewsofsomeoftheleadingphilosophersofthetime.

Thereisuniversalagreementthatacriticalapproachisthemainforce
pushinghumanthoughtforward,andthatcriticism,asanattribute
ofthought,mustbeanessentialelementofrationalreflectiononreal-
ity.Adeficitofcriticismleadsnotonlytostagnationinscholarship
andscience,butalsototheappearanceofvariousformsofdogmatism,
whichdonotpermittheemergenceofalternativeviews,northerevi-
sionofpositionsacknowledgedasfinal.Dogmatisminscienceoftengoes
handinhandwithdogmatisminworldviews,whichmanifestsitself
inthesocialsphereintheformofaconvictionthatfinalsolutionshave
beenfound.Theabilitytothinkcriticallyisarefreshingqualityinboth
academicandsocialdebates,andmayevenbejinthePyrrhonianspiritj
anantidotetothedeceitfulconsequencesofunreflectivedogmatism.
