Ofcourse,thisthesisassumesthatdefacto,thereisnophilosophywith-

outpremises,whichisnotanovelidea,thoughitremainscontroversial

forsomeanderroneousforothers(phenomenologists,forexample).Philo-

sophicalreﬂectionbeginswiththeindicationofaboundary(boundaries),

whichmeansthatitisabsentfromtheundifferentiatedwhole,ortheOne,

whichPlatodiscussedinhypothesisIofparttwoofthedialoguePar-

menides.

Thisbroadestformofcriticismmaybedescribedassource-

-separativecriticism.

Inanarrowersense,ashasalreadybeenmentioned,criticismmaybe

understoodasacertaincognitiveapproachinoppositiontodogmatism,

whichconsistsinconstantinquiry,involvesaceaselesssearchfortruth,

andrequiresthemostcomprehensiveanalysispossibleofanyissuesub-

jectedtostudy,yetwithoutclaimingtohaveachievedanyﬁnal,irrefut-

abletruth.Aswehavealreadyestablished,suchacognitiveapproach

istiedinwithacertainqualityofthoughtconsistinginamulti-aspected

referencetogivenfactsandintheirconfrontationwithone’sownconvic-

tions,whichleadstothenecessityofreﬂectingonthereasonswhythese

convictionsareheld,andresultsinthepossibilityofrevisingone’sviews.

Inthissense,criticismcorrespondswiththesourceGreekunderstand-

ingofskepticism

aszeteticanti-dogmatism.Criticismunderstoodasthis

typeofskepticismstandsinoppositionbothtopositiveandnegative

dogmatism,bothinitsactual(weaker)andmodal(strong)dimensions,

andthereforeaskepticsearchesfortruthwithoutprejudgingwhether

hewillattainitornot.Iproposetocallthistypeofcriticismanti-

-dogmaticcriticism.
