INTRODUCTION
ThegeopoliticalsituationoftheSouthCaucasusandthe
MiddleEastmakestheseareasveryimportantininternational
relations,inpastandnowadays.Thesamesituationoccured
duringandafterWorldWarI,whenthreeindependentstates
werecreatedintheSouthCaucasus

:Armenia,Azerbaijan
andGeorgia.Inturn,theformerOttomanEmpire,whichhad
coveredalargepartoftheMiddleEast,wassubjectedto
violentchangesaftertheendofWorldWarI,resultinginthe
creationofanindependentTurkeyandthecreationofman-
datesintheArabterritoriesoftheformerOttomanEmpire,
heldbyFranceandtheUnitedKingdomonbehalfofthe
LeagueofNations.

Thefollowingtermsshallbeusedinterchangeably:‘SouthCaucasus’
and‘Transcaucasia’.Thelattertermisusedforstylisticreasonsonly,but
innowayisitrelatedtosuggestingthedependenceoftheregionandthe
countriestherefromthetsars’empireandthenfromtheSovietRussia.
