Preface
Theconceptof‘hydraulic(fluidpower)gearmachines’(HGM)referstosuchatype
ofmachinesutilizedinthefluidpowerdriveandcontrolsystems,wheregearscon-
stitutethebasicsystembothintermsoftheprincipleofdesignandofoperation.HGM
areemployedtochangemechanicalenergyintohydraulicenergyorconversely.
Theformerarepumps,andthelatter-hydraulicmotors.
TheauthorhasbeendealingwithHGMforover40years,firstonhisown,and
forthelastseveralyears,withagroupofcollaboratorswithintheFluidPowerResearch
GroupwhoworksattheDepartmentofFundamentalsofMachineDesignandTribology
attheFacultyoftheMechanicalEngineeringofWroclawUniversityofScienceand
Technology.Theoriginalknowledgeaccumulatedasaresultoftheauthor’sworkhas
beenorderedandcoherentlypresentedinthisbook.Theknowledgehasbeenputinto
aframeworkofthedesignprocess,andthebookhasbeentitled‘Fundamentalsof
designinghydraulicgearmachines’.Theworkcontainsboththetheoreticalknowl-
edge(Chapters1-6and9-10)andtheknowledgeresultingfromexperimentalresearch
(Chapters7-8).Readingthroughtheconsecutivechaptersofthebookonefindsout
howtodesignvariouskindsandtypesofhydraulicgearmachines.Thevalidityand
efficiencyofsuchanapproachisprovedinthelast,namelyeleventhchapterof
thebook,inwhichvariousmachinesdesignedaccordingtotheprinciplesspecifiedin
thebookarepresented.Someofthemachinesfunctionasindustrialproducts,and
others,inaformofprototypesormodels,arereadytobeintroducedintheindustrial
practice.Theknowledgepresentedinthisbookcanbeusedalsoinotherareasof
machinedesign.Forinstance,thecontentsofChapter3,concerningthecycloidal
gearing,couldbeappliedinthedesigningofthemechanicalcycloidaltransmissions.
Similarly,thevisualisationresearchmethodsutilizedtostudythephenomenaandproc-
essoccurringinthechannelsandclearancesofthehydraulicgearmachinespresented
inChapter7couldbeappliedfortheresearchintoothertypesoffluidpowermachines
andappliancessuchasvalves,directionalvalves,orevenentirehydraulicsystems.
Theauthorwillbesatisfiedifhisbookgraspsthereaders’interestandbecomesuseful
insolvingtheirprofessionalproblems.
Theillustrationsgiveninaformofdesigndrawings,diagramsorcurvesplay
asignificantroleinthepublication.Forthepreparationofthosefigures,theauthor
