oftheorganizationanditsshapeinthefuture.Hence,thepurposeof
thechapteristoinvestigatethesignificanceoftheprofessionalization
processinthecontextofthedevelopmentofNGOs.Tedevelopment
ofNGOsinlife-cycleperspectiveistobeanalysedhere,andspecial
attentionwillbedevotedtotheprocessofprofessionalizationandits
assessmentinthiscontext.Internationalliteratureandstudiescarried
outinmanycountrieswereanalysed,however,attentionwasalsopaid
tothePolishcontext,duetobackgroundindicationofthepresented
researchresults.InthisstudyselectedPolishNGOswillalsobeexam-
inedthroughcasestudyanalysis.Tischapteristoanswerquestions
aboutthedevelopmentdirectionsofPolishNGOs,andinparticular,
preferreddevelopmentpathsofprofessionalizingorganizations.

internationalresearch
ReferringtothedevelopmentofNGOs,manyauthorsusuallyhaveno
doubtthattheyaresubjecttothesameprocessesasothertypesoforgan-
izations(see,e.g.,Chodyński,2008,p.25,Bogacz-Wojtanowska,2006,
p.120-121).Ofcourse,theseorganizationsdińerinmanyrespects,e.g.
inthenatureofthemissiontheyimplement,inthedińerentscopeof
implementationofstrategic(e.g.marketingandsocio-economic)ob-
jectives,andasaconsequence,incertainmanagementpractices,but
theycanundoubtedlybeconsideredacollectiveity.Inthiscontext,it
seemsreasonablethatmanystudiesonthedevelopmentofNGOsare
basedonlife-cycleconceptsdevelopedforfor-profitcompanies(cf.e.g.
SantoraandSarros,2008;Strichman,et.al,2008).
Ontheotherhand,duetothespecificityofNGOs,therearedevel-
opmentmodelsbeingdeveloped,dedicatedtotheprocessessuitable
fortheseorganizations.Forexample,thelifecyclemodeldevelopedby
Stevens(2001)isoneofthem.Temodeldesignwasbasedonmodels
developedforprofit-orientedcompanies,suchastheGreinermodel(as
