situationofintenseconfrontationwiththesocialworld,clearlydistantintheax-
iologicalandnormativesense,astrugglebetweentheethnicandthesocialworld
maytakeplaceinthemindofaparticularindividual.ACanadiandocumentary
filmIntheNameoftheFamily,directedbyShelleySayweel,showsthestories
ofyoungMuslimwomenwhocametoToronto,dallas,andNewYork,leaving
theirfamiliesinAfghanistan,Pakistan,orEgypt.TeywantedtostayMuslim
but,atthesametime,theywantedtolivedińerently-withoutheadscarves,
wearingjeansandtrendyt-shirts,withmanyfriendsamongthenon-Muslims,
studyingandworking.Teywantedtoperformtheroleofawoman,wife,and
motherinadińerentway.Choosingtheirownpath,theyobjectedtothefa-
thersandbrothers,forwhichtheypaidtheultimateprice-theirlives.Tey
wantedtoliveintwoworlds,butthepoweroftraditiondidnotallowthemto
doso.Teywerekilledinthenameofthefamilyhonor,religion,andculture.
TeUnitedNationsestimatesthatthereareapproximatelyfivethousandsimilar
killingsayear.Tisisadrasticexampleillustratingtheproblemofidentityin
