otherhalf”(Deleuze2004,182).Butwhatdoesthatmean?Inwhatsense
isserializationoneofthecrucialkeyfeaturesofamovingstructure?
InoneofJacquesLacan’sfamoustexts,hecommentsonuThePur-
loinedLetter”byEdgarAllenPoe,showinghowtheustructure”puts
intoplaytwoseries,theplacesofwhichareoccupiedbyvariablesubjects
(Lacan1972).Thefirstseriesconsistsoftheking,whodoesnotseethe
letter;thequeen,whoisthrilledathavingsocleverlyhiddenitbyleav-
ingitoutintheopen;andtheminister,whoseeseverythingandtakes
possessionoftheletter(Deleuze2004).Thesecondseriesconsistsofthe
policewhofindnothingattheminister’shotel,theministerwhoisthrilled
athavingsocleverlyhiddentheletterbyleavingitoutintheopen,and
C.AugusteDupin–perhapsthefirstdetectiveinthehistoryoflitera-
ture–whoseeseverythingandtakesbackpossessionoftheletter.Not
aspiringtotheroleofdetectiveDupin,wewouldsaythattoday,inthe
streamingera,thestatusofastolenletterandthesubjectwhopossesses
it,intellectualproperty,andworksofart,ingeneral,areuncertain.What
isthefutureofthePurloinedLetterintheageofbigdata?Isthestealing
oftheuletter”stillstealingintimeswhenthetransmissionmessagenever
ceases,neverdies?Isstreamingstealing?
Finally,oneshouldaskwhatisunconsciousintheworldofseriality.
Doesserialitytodaynotamounttoudividingthecollective”intoasetof
separateindividualswhoonlyrelatetoeachotherthroughtheiremptyor
narcissisticidentities,suchaspassengersatastop,consumersinshopping
malls,studentssigningupforseminarsoneducationalplatforms,sickpeo-
pleregisteringinclinics,finallycitizens,taxpayerswhochoosetheirleaders
everyfewyears.Thetimeofserialityisatimeofwidespreadautism,dis-
turbingtheabilitytocontactpeopleandreplacingthisabilitywithasocial
hallucination–afalseawarenessofmeeting,anillusionofcontact.
Theunconscious,accordingtoLacan,isneitherindividualnorcol-
lectivebutintersubjective,whichistosaythatitimpliesdevelopmentin
termsofseries.Seriesareinseparablefromtheslippagesordisplacements
theyundergoinrelationtothetermsoftheother.Theyarethusinsepa-
rablefromthevariationofdilerentialrelations.Forthisreason,Deleuze
concludesthatthestructure–unconsciousenvelopsauwhollyparadoxical
object”orelement.Suchanobjectisalwayspresentinthecorresponding
series;ittraversesandmoveswiththem;itneverceasestocirculateinthem
andfromonetotheotherwithextraordinaryagility.Whatelsewouldwe
