Fortunately,no-onecanseeasinglenegativepoint
inhistoryofthetwocountries’relations,especially
throughoutfivecenturiesofofficialcontacts.Accordingly,
wecansaythat,thewarmreceptionofPolishChristian
fellowsisthebrightestpartofthiscommonhistory.
InsuchsituationinwhichEuropewassufferingfrom
bloodshedanddestruction,anditspeoplewerevictims
ofdisplacementandpain,mycountry,Iran,inspite
ofbeinginvolvedintheconsequencesofthatdestructive
war,sharedwhatitstillhadwiththeguests,because
ofhumanity,hospitalityandculturalandreligious
teachings.
Ofcourse,thepresenceofsickandweakPolish
refugeesinevitablybroughtproblemsanddifficulties,but
Poles’interminglingwithIranianswasarareopportunity
forbothnationstogettoknoweachotherbetterand
deeper.
Polishrefugeesbecameinvolvedincultural,artistic,
scientificandliteratureactivitiesduringtheirpresence
inIran,especiallyinTehranandIsfahan.Establishing
literatureassociations,studyingIraniancultureprofoundly
andperformingPolishculturalprogrammes,played
averypositiveroleinculturalexchangebetweenthetwo
nations,andtheestablishmentofIranianstudiesand
PersianlanguagedepartmentattheUniversity
ofWarsaw,whichpreviouslyexistedonlyinKrakow,
isonlyoneofitsconsequences.
ThemajorityofPolishrefugeesleftIranafterwar,but
afewcemeteriesbelongingtothemhaveremained
there,andIranhasdoneitsbesttomaintainthemasthe
commonheritageofthetwonations.Inspiteofthis,
aboutthreehundredrefugees,somebecauseofmarriage
toIraniancitizens,remainedinIran,andfortunatelyafew
ofthemarestillalive.Wehadachancetohostone
ofthosewhostillliveinIran(MrsStelmach)accompanied
bytheotherlivinginPoland,inmyresidenceinWarsaw
lastsummer.
