Summary
Theaimofthearticleisanattempttoexplainanddescribequantitatively
whetherandtowhatdegreeknowledgecapitalgenerateseconomicgrowthof
aregionandenhancescompetitiveadvantageofitseconomy.Thearticle
concentratesontheanalysisofpartialdependenciesbetweenthechosen
attributesofknowledgecapitalandeconomicgrowthintheEuropean
macroregions.
Itisassumedthattheregion’sknowledgecapitalisreflectedintotal
expendituresonR&Dandinternaloutlaysforthemainsectorsofperfor-
mance:businessenterprise,governmentandhighereducation.Eachtime
thoseoutlaysarecalculatedperonepersonemployedinthemacroregion’s
economyandtheirvaluesaretreatedastheexplainingvariables.Inthe
regressionequationstheexplainedvariableislabourproductivitydeter-
minedbythevalueoftheregion’sgrossproductperoneemployee.The
analysiswasbasedonthedatafor82units
(NUTS1)
intheyears1999–
2004.Duetothelackofreliabledataandspecificcharacterofeconomies
theanalysisdidnotincludesmallcountriessuchasLuxembourg,Cyprus
andMalta,FrenchandPortugueseoverseasterritoriesaswellasthe
macroregionsofBulgariaandRomania.Itisassumedthatconclusions
formulatedforsuchasetofunitsmayapplytothewholegroup.
Themainconclusionsfromtheanalysisconfirmcurvilinearityofthe
dependencebetween
GERDtotal,GERDbusiness,GERDgovandGERDhigh
education
andlabourproductivityinthemacroregions.Theimpactexerted
bythoseexpendituresontheregionalindicatorsoflabourproductivity
decreasesinthecourseoftime.Thearticleidentifiesandconfirms
statisticallyasignificantinfluenceofR&Dexpendituresintheuniversity
sectoronthegrowthofmacroregions’labourproductivity.Thisconclusion
maybeusefulforthescientific-researchpolicyofthecountries.
