littlereliefinthat,Iresolved,ifpossible,togettotheship;soIpulledoffmyclothes-
fortheweatherwasveryhot-andtookthewater.ButwhenIcametotheshipmy
difficultywasstillgreatertoknowhowtogetonboard;for,asshelayaground,andhigh
outofthewater,therewasnothingwithinmyreachtolayholdof.Iswamroundher
twice,andthesecondtimeIspiedasmallpieceofrope,whichIwonderedIdidnotsee
atfirst,hungdownbythefore-chainssolow,asthatwithgreatdifficultyIgotholdofit,
andbythehelpofthatropeIgotupintotheforecastleoftheship.HereIfoundthatthe
shipwasbulged,andhadagreatdealofwaterinherhold,butthatshelaysoontheside
ofabankofhardsand,or,ratherearth,thathersternlayliftedupuponthebank,andher
headlow,almosttothewater.Bythismeansallherquarterwasfree,andallthatwasin
thatpartwasdry;foryoumaybesuremyfirstworkwastosearch,andtoseewhatwas
spoiltandwhatwasfree.And,first,Ifoundthatalltheship'sprovisionsweredryand
untouchedbythewater,andbeingverywelldisposedtoeat,Iwenttothebreadroom
andfilledmypocketswithbiscuit,andateitasIwentaboutotherthings,forIhadno
timetolose.Ialsofoundsomeruminthegreatcabin,ofwhichItookalargedram,and
whichIhad,indeed,needenoughoftospiritmeforwhatwasbeforeme.NowIwanted
nothingbutaboattofurnishmyselfwithmanythingsIforesawwouldbeverynecessary
tome.
