CoastCentralStationinLiverpool.Hewasasmallman,middle-agedanddark,with
astoopwhichwassomarkedthatitsuggestedsomedeformityofthespine.Hewas
accompaniedbyafriend,amanofimpressivephysique,whosedeferentialmannerand
constantattentionshowedthathispositionwasoneofdependence.Thisfriendor
companion,whosenamedidnottranspire,wascertainlyaforeigner,andprobablyfrom
hisdarkcomplexion,eitheraSpaniardoraSouthAmerican.Onepeculiaritywas
observedinhim.Hecarriedinhislefthandasmallblack,leatherdispatchbox,andit
wasnoticedbyasharp-eyedclerkintheCentralofficethatthisboxwasfastenedto
hiswristbyastrap.Noimportancewasattachedtothefactatthetime,but
subsequenteventsendoweditwithsomesignificance.MonsieurCaratalwasshownup
toMr.Bland'soffice,whilehiscompanionremainedoutside.
