ordertoavoidso-calledindividualmeasurementerrors,eachmeasure-
mentshouldberepeatedtwice.Inthestudyofbodyasymmetry,measure-
mentsaretakenonbothsidesofthebody.
1.2.Measurementtechniqueinkinanthropometry
MeasurementsareperformedaccordingtotheclassicMartintech-
nique.ThetechniquewasdevelopedbyRudolfMartin(1928),withsome
measurementsbeingrefinedinsubsequentyears(Godycki,1956;Martin
andSaller,1957;MalinowskiandBożiłow,1997).Amongthemostim-
portantrulesfortakingmeasurementsare:
Beforetakingmeasurementswithaparticularinstrument,itszeropoint
shouldbecheckedsothatthereadingistakenatthecorrectlocation.
Thepersonbeingmeasuredshouldbeundressed(inunderwearonly)
andanthropometricpointsshouldbemarked(e.g.withmarkers)onhis
orherbody.
Measurementsinsports(especiallybodycircumferenceandskinfolds)
shouldnotbetakenimmediatelyaftertrainingorsauna-typewellness,
astheycanbesubjecttoerroranddonotreflectadequatebodydimen-
sions.
Beforeeachmeasurement,themeasuredpersonshouldbeplacedin
thecorrectbodyposition,withgreatattentionpaidtothepositioningof
thehead(instandingpositions:evenlyweighted,joined,andstraight-
enedlowerlimbs;insittingpositions:correctpositioningofthebackand
lowerlimbs).
Inthecourseoftakingseveralconsecutivemeasurements,theposition
ofthepersonbeingmeasuredmustnotchange.
Unilateralmeasurementsaretakenontheleftsideofthebody,asrec-
ommendedbytheInternationalBiologicalResearchProgram(Weiner
andLourie,1969).Measurementsonbothsidesofthebody,e.g.,for
assessingasymmetryinsports,aremadeaccordingtothegeneralpro-
cedureatpointsbasedonthemirrorimage.
Measurementsarerecordedwiththeaccuracyoftheinstrument.
Insports,measurementsaretakenbothaspartofongoingandperiodic
diagnostics(beforetheperiodofcompetitions,afterit,beforethepre-
paratoryperiod,andafterbreaksduetoinjury;thisisespeciallytruefor
bodycircumferencesandskinfolds).
