Anthropometricposture:thepersonbeingmeasuredshouldbeinthe
correctposition.Theyshouldremovetheirshoes,straightenthebody,
puttheirfeettogether,andplacetheupperlimbsfreelyalongthetorso.
TheFrankfurtplaneshouldbemaintainedinthealignmentofthehead
(horizontalauricular-orbitalplane)(figure2).
ThehorizontalFrankfurtplaneisthestandardheadorskullposi-
tionusedinphysicalanthropology.Theexaminermustpositionthesub-
ject'sheadsothattheplanepassingthroughthelowestpointonthelower
edgeoftheleftorbitalcavity(anthropometricpointorbitale)andthehighest
pointontheupperedgeoftheexternalauditorymeatus(anthropometric
pointtragion)areparalleltotheground.Onlywhentheheadiscorrectly
alignedinthehorizontalFrankfurtplanewillthehighestpointontopofthe
head,orvertex,becorrectlydetermined.

Takingcorrectsomaticmeasurementsrequiresagoodknowledge
ofthetopographyofanthropometricpoints(figure3)onthehuman
body.Anthropometricpointsarepreciselydefinedlocationsonthehuman
skeletonorbody.Thedistancesbetweenthemorbetweenthemandthe
ground(base)arecalledanthropometricmeasurements.
