Abstract
Tesubjectoftheanalysisisafifeenth-centurystapleofKoreanliterature,Naehun
(InstructionfortheInnerQuarters).Tebookisarecordofmoralandlifeteachings
forwomenfromthecourtelite,andwascreatedbyQueenSohye,basedonvarious
Chinesesourcesandbiographies.Init,theoriginalteachingsandparableswritten
inclassicalChinese(hanmun)wereaccompaniedbythetranslationintoKorean.
Tevernacularversionaddedtothetextprovesthatithadanimportanteduca-
tionalroleforpeoplefromvarioussocialstrata,beyondthecircleofaristocracy.
FallinginlinewiththeConfuciantradition,ethicsteachingsareintegratedwith
lessonsonceremonialrites,andmoralsaretaughtthroughrecallingpatternsof
behaviorfromthelegendaryandmythicalChinesetraditions,withthedominant
roleofthelivesoffamouswomen.Teeducationalaspectofthetextcoversmany
areasofdomesticlife,includingadmonitionsonmanagingahousehold,familylife
andchildren’seducation.Naehunhasaprominentplaceintheculturalheritage
ofChosŏnKorea,andisvaluedasaconsciousrepresentationoftheworldof
women,theirneedsandexpectations,canonsoffeminineknowledgeandmorality.
