beingfixed,isarelationalphenomenon,dependentuponcontext,environment,
placeandtime.Therefore,identityemergeswithinasocialsettinginwhich
welearntotakeontheroleofothersandbegintoseeourselvesfrom
theothers’perspective.Mead(1934/1962)suggeststheconceptofthe
!I-Medialectic’tohelpunderstandthesephenomena.The!Me’isthe
phenomenologicalunderstandingofapersonwithinagivensocio-historical
contextinrelationtotheirage,gender,professionorrole;anexamplebeing
!teacher’.The!I’isthepersonalorindividualselfwhichrespondstothe
conceptofthe!Me’thusestablishingareflexive,interactiveprocessor
!dialectic’whichcanaffectchangeineitherorboth.Exemplifyingthisidea,
Beijaard(1995)suggeststhatateachers’senseofselfintermsoffeelingsof
adequacy/inadequacy(the!I’)isoftenreliantuponteacher/pupilrelationships
andhowpupilsperceivethemasteachers(the!Me’).
Anobvioussiteforshapingateacher’sidentityistheworkplace(Leeferkink,
Koopman,Beijaard,&Schellings,2019).Smagorinsky,Cook,Moore,Jackson
andFry(2004)pointtotheimportanceofthepracticumasprovidingaforum
whichcaneitherpromoteordetractfromthesenseofagencyandidentity
whichemerges.Inaddition,KelchtermansandHamilton(2004)suggestthat
thepracticumcanalsomakeasignificantcontributiontothedevelopment
ofthevalues,attitudesanddispositionscharacteristicofpracticingteachers.
Alongsidecontextistheinfluenceofotherprofessionals(Beauchamp
&Thomas,2009).FriesenandBesley(2013)suggestthatwhenthereareshared
similaritieswithothersindefinedsocialgroupssocialidentityemerges.Whilst
eithersocialorpersonalidentitymaybecomemoresalientunderdifferent
circumstances,theyalsosuggestthat,insimilarfashiontoMead’s(1934/1962)
!I-Medialectic’,personalandsocialidentitiesalsointeracttothepointwhere
thecharacteristicsofonemaybeadoptedbytheother.
Forpre-serviceteachers,utheyarecreatingtheirworldwhilealsobeing
shapedbyit”(Cooper&Olson,1996,p.83)andsotheirprofessionalidentityis
fluidandthiscanleadtotension.Reynolds(1996)agreesandproposesthatfor
earlycareerteachers,thenaturalinclinationisto!blendin’andberecognised
asa!goodteacher’,reflectingwhatevernormsareapparentatthetime.Because
ofthis,theimportanceofexposuretoadiversityofexperienceisimportantto
allowteacherstoconstruct,deconstructandreconstructtheirteacheridentity
withindifferentcontexts(Coldron&Smith,1999).
