INTRODUCTION

“Aneconomiccrisis,aneedfornewskillsandtheconsequencesofdemographic

changes,whichEuropehastoface,emphasizeakeyroleofadulteducationin

thestrategiesofconstanteducationasanelementofpoliciesofcompetitiveness

andemployment,socialinclusionandactivecitizenship.1”Tisopinionofthe

CouncilofEuropehasitsgroundsinthedatacollectedbythe2013Growth

Survey,whichconﬁrms“thekeyroleofeducationasamajorfactorofdevelop-

mentandcompetitiveness.2”

Adulteducationisaconstantlyexpandingareaofresearch,adevelopingthe-

orywithnewﬁeldsofeducationalpractices,andisoneofthemostdynamically

developingdisciplinesintheareaofeducationalsciences.

Tisbook,whichistheresultofcooperationbetweenthescientistsofthe

UniversityofLjubljanaandtheJagiellonianUniversityinCracow,presents

selectedexamplesofthecurrentdevelopmentofadulteducationasascientiﬁc

discipline.Itencompassesnotonlysigniﬁcantissuesfromthestandpointof

economyinthescopeofkeycompetences,butalsoconceptsrelatedtothesocial,

cultural,scientiﬁc,artisticandcommonschooling,leadingtomorecompre-

hensivepersonaldevelopmentandraisingthequalityoflife.

ApresentationoftextsbySlovenianandPolishauthorswasconductedon

thethreeinterrelatedandcomplementingplanes,whichencompassnewareas,

institutionalcontextandpracticesoflifelonglearning.

Teterm“area”isassociatedwitharelativelydeﬁnedcollectionofissuesthat

mayconstitutethecurrent,oratleastpotentialsubjectofresearchandpedago-

gicalactivities.A“newarea”doesnothavetobeacompletelyunknownarea.

Contemporarypedagogydealswithsomanyareasthatitwouldbehardtoﬁnd

ablankspaceonthemappresentingthem.A“novelty”ofsomeoftheseareascan

benoticedonlywhenwelookatthemfromtheperspectiveoflifelonglearning.

Adulteducation,whichisresponsibleforsatisfyingsigniﬁcantneedsthat

occurinafastchangingreality,isfrequentlyperformedinaninformalway

asaresultofspontaneous,socialandindividuallearning.Itssigniﬁcanceis
