Summary:Theobjectiveofthearticleistoidentifythenatureofspatialdependencein
termsofeconomicdeterminantsfortheregionsofCentralandEasternEuropeancountries
(accordingtoEurostatmethodologyitcorrespondswithNUTS-2level).Statisticalandspatial
econometricstoolswereusedfortheanalysis.Oneoftheeffectsofthestudyisdeterminingthe
natureandsignificanceofspatialdependencebymeansofidentifyingtheexistenceofclusters
formedbyregions-neighbourspresentingthesimilarlevelofdevelopment.Thesecondpart
ofthearticleattemptstoassesstheimpactofspatialdependenceontheestimationsofbeta
absoluteconvergencemodels.Thestudycoveredtheperiod2000-2010.

1.Introduction
Thedisproportionsinsocio-economicdevelopmentrepresentoneofthekey
problemscharacteristicforregionalandcohesionpolicyintheEuropeanUnion.The
literaturereferencespresentnumerousstudiesrelatedtosocio-economicdevelopment.
Varioustypesoftoolsandtechniques,fromdescriptivestatisticsmethodsand
indicatorstoadvancedtaxonomicmethodsandeconometricmodels,areappliedfor
thequantitativedescriptionofsocio-economicdevelopment.Mostfrequentlythe
performedanalysesarebasedondataintheformoftimeorcross-sectionalseries
(e.g.abouthouseholds[Dziechciarz-Duda,Król,Przybysz2012,pp.144-152,regions
[Markowska,Jefmański2012,pp.74-93;Hlaváček2009],regionaldistricts
“powiaty”[Pietrzak2010]),paneldata(e.g.forcountries[Ciołek2004],regions
[Bal-Domańska2013(b)]).Intheprocessofconstructingeconometricmodels
describingthedeterminantsofeconomicgrowthcreatedbasedoncross-sectionalor
paneldatareferringtocountriesorregions,theproblemappearsofhowtodefine
certainphenomenaoccurringacrossadministrativeborders.Thissituationiswell
illustratedbytheexampleoflargeurbancentreswhichmostoftencoveranareaof
oneregionanditsneighbours.Theyarefrequentlyconnectedbyverystrong
