ABSTRACT:
Languagelocalization,definedastheprocessofadaptingcontenttotheneeds
ofagivenlocaleortargetmarket,isarelativelynewphenomenoninthelan-
guageservicesindustry.Itquicklybecameafieldofhighimportancesince
worldwidecompaniesaremoreoftenwillingtoinvestfundstomakesure
theirproductsandservicesarereadytobelaunchedintheglobalmarket,at
thesametimebeingawarethatmuchofsuccessdependsontheirinterna-
tionalscopeandtarget-orientedapproach.Inpractice,computersoftware,
worldwidewebsormobileapplicationsthataretobelocalizedconstitute
bothacomplexmulti-mediasourcematerialtoworkonfortranslatorsand
localizers,currentlybeingindistinguishablefromeachother.Takinginto
considerationatraditionaltranslationapproach,localizationisposingafresh
challengefortranslatorsandtranslationstudies.Ontheonehand,asadevel-
opingfieldofstudyitshedsabrand-newlightontranslationasawhole,by
introducingnovelareassuchashypertextualityorweblanguagesandcreat-
ingagreaterdemandfortranslationproductsandskills.Ontheotherhand,
theconceptitselfiscriticizedwithrespecttothemarginalizationoftheroleof
translatorsandreductionofthetranslationprocesstoanautomatedreplace-
mentofstringofwordsfromSLintoTL.Thefollowingpaperattemptsto
presentthekeyconceptsoflanguagelocalization,interlinkedwithinterna-
tionalization,anddiscussesitspurposefromfunctionalandbusinessperspec-
tives.Furthermore,theroleoftranslatorsandlocalizersinthelocalization
processaswellasfunctionalimplicationsoftheprocessarealsoputforward
forconsiderationinthispaper.
