Preface
SincethecompletionofmyPhDthesisbackinJune,2004,Ihavebeengrad-
uallyturningmyattentionfromcoredataminingalgorithms[88,89,93,95,
127]towardsinvestigatingnewdataminingfrontiers,mostnotably,inthe
fieldofsocialnetworks.Astonishedwithanunprecedentedviralspreadof
socialapplications,combinedwithenormousadvancementsinbothhard-
wareandsoftwareunderlyingtheWeb2.0revolution,Ihavedecidedto
focusonthesenewdevelopmentsandseekopportunitiestoemploydata
miningtechniquestodiscoverinterestingknowledgeinvastvolumesofdata
constitutingtheworldofWeb2.0.Asapersonoriginatingfromadatabase
community,myperspectiveisstronglybiasedtowardsstructure,constraints
andoperationsofamodel.Mostresearchersactiveinthesocialnetwork
domaincomefromdistributedprocessing,statistics,orgraphtheory.Ihope
thatmydatabasetheorybackgroundprovidesaninterestinginsightintothe
discussedsubject.
Thisdissertationsummarizestheresearchconductedovertheperiodof
fouryearsinthedomainssodiverseasblogs,Internetforums,onlineauc-
tions,andmovingobjectdatabases.Asaconsequence,thevarietyofsubjects
presentedinthedissertationmayinduceincoherenceanddisjointednessbe-
tweenchapters.Ihavelinkedthechaptersbythecommonthemeoftrust
andconfidence,thecrucialnotionsfromwhichotherimportantsocialmea-
suresarederived.Also,inordertoimprovethequalityofthepresentation
andthereadabilityofthedissertation,Ihaveusedastricttemplateforall
thechapters.Eachchapterstartswithabriefintroductionandcontinues
withasectiononrelatedwork.Then,themainbodyofthechapterispre-
sented,followedbyexperiments.Attheendofeachchapterthereaderfinds
asectionwithconclusionsandthefutureworkagenda.
Thedissertationisdividedintothreemainparts.PartI,”TheWorldof
theNew”,consistsofchapterspresentingthebackgroundfortheresearch.
Chapter1presentsanintroductiontotheWeb2.0revolutionanddescribes
newformsofsocialactivities(blogs,Internetforums,andonlineauctions).
Basedonthisintroduction,themotivationfortheconductedresearchis
presentedandthemainthesisofthedissertationisformulated.InChap-
ter2thecharacteristicsofthedataproducedbyWeb2.0applicationsare
described.Thesecharacteristicsarecrucialforunderstandingtheresearch
