Abstract
ThemuontriggerfortheBackingCalorimeter(BAC)implementedintheZEUSexperimentis
presented.TheZEUSexperimentoperatedattheHERAacceleratorintheDeutschesSynchrotron
(DESY)laboratoryinHamburg.Itwasdesignedtostudytheprotonstructureandthenatureof
interactionofitsconstituentsusinghighenergyelectron–protoncollisions.Afterintroducingthe
HERAacceleratorandtheZEUSdetector,theBackingCalorimeterwasdescribedindetails.BAC
wasdesignedandconstructedbyphysicistsandengineersfromUniversityofWarsawandAGH
UniversityofScienceandTechnologyinKraków.DuringtheupgradeoftheHERAacceleratorand
itsdetectors,theBackingCalorimeterwasequippedwithmuontrigger.Themotivationleading
tothisproject,thedescriptionoftheBACmuontriggersystemandthedetailedanalysisofits
performanceconstitutesthemaincontentofthiswork.Finally,selectedphysicsresultsobtainedby
usingBACasamuondetectorarepresented.
