HenotedaboutShiliinBogdthatitwasthemostEasternmountainintheDariganga
banner(Mong.khoshuu).Thatmountain’soldnamewasAgshuBogdomentionedby
JanmuintheNotesabouttheMongolianpastures(Мэн-гую-муцзи).AgshuBogdo
wasattheborderoffourbanners.6
ThethirdmapofDarigangawasmadein1931-1941aspartoftheDornodprovince
andtherethemountainwasmentionedas“ShiliinBogd”.Itwasclearthatthenamewas
changedinthefirsthalfofthe20thcentury.
ItcouldberelatedtothefactthatDarigangasoftengavenicknamestovarious
places.Forinstance,eventhoughtheirmainworshippedmountainisnamedofficially
Dari,theycallitAltanovoo.Similarily,Darigangasmighthavecalledthemountainas
ShiliinBogdinsteadofAgshuun.Furthermore,ShiliinBogdbecametheofficialname
ofthatmountaininthe20thcentury.Interestingly,nowadaysnativesalsocallit‘Bogd’
ineverydaytalks.
AfamouswriterfromDariganga,Maam,describedthelandscapeofhishomeland
inhisnovelGazarshoroo:

PlateauofDariganga.7
MainlylocalpeoplewatchtheDarigangaareawhichismixedzoneofsteppeand
highland.ThesouthernborderofDarigangaistheShiliinGolprovinceinInnerMongolia,
China.Thenameoftheprovinceoriginatesfromariver’sname.Etymologically,the
namemeans‘riverofaplateau’.Geographically,landscapesofDarigangaandtheShiliin
Golprovincearesimilartoeachother.AndShiliinBogdisthehighestmountaininthe
Darigangaplateau.Therefore,localpeoplehonoreditasBogd,i.e.‘holy’mountain.Bogd
isanhonorificnameoreventitleformountains.Somemountainshigherthanothersin
theirvicinityarecalled“Bogd”,8suchasBogdKhan,AltaiTavanBogd,andKhanBogd.
InthemodernMongolianlanguage,shilisdefinedvariously:as1.‘arangeofhigh
mountain,’2.‘dipplacebehindamountain,’3.‘backofamountain’.9Invariousregions
ofMongoliathiswordmaybeunderstooddifferently.Inthiscase,theDarigangascall
plateaushil.
