InEurope,eventsofEuropeanchampionshiprankareorganizedby
theEuropeanDeafSportsOrganisation(EDSO),whichisinexistence
since1983.Previously,theEuropeanchampionshipswereorganizedby
theInternationalCommitteeofSportsfortheDeaf.Atpresent,theEuro-
peanDeafSportsOrganisationassociates40Europeancountries(50,000
athletes,1000sportsclubs)andholdschampionshipsin29sportsdisci-
plinesindiferentagecategories.
InPoland,deafsporthasanearly100-year-oldtradition.Polishdeaf
athletesregularlyparticipateinDeaflympicsandworldandEuropean
championships.TeachievementsofthePolishDeaflympicsathleteswere
describedindetailbyJaniecandStempurski[2011].
Tedynamicorganizationaldevelopmentofdeafsports,bestdocu-
mented,didnotstartuntilafer2000.InJune2004,thePolishdeafactiv-
ists)andathletes)communityestablishedanewnationalorganizationasso-
ciatingdeafclubsandathletes,calledthePolishDeafSportsFederation,
withWojciechStempurskiasPresident.Tereasonforfoundingthenew
institutionwasthefinancialandorganizationalproblemsoftheprevi-
ouslyoperatingPolishDeafSportsUnionandtheconflictwiththeMin-
istryofNationalEducationandSport.In2005,17clubsweremembersof
thePolishDeafSportsFederation;inthefollowingyear,another6clubs
joinedtheFederation.Attheendof2007,thePolishDeafSportsFedera-
tionalreadyassociated30clubs.TedynamicdevelopmentoftheFedera-
tionwaspossibleowingtotherestartedfinancingofthedeafsportsfrom
thestatebudgetandfromtheParalympicCommitteeaferafewyears)
break.In2006,thefirstnationalsportscompetitionundertheauspicesof
