1.PreferencerepresentationinNegoManagesystem
Indifferencesetsandtheircharacteristics
IntheNegoManagesystemthenegotiatordefinespreferencesby
specifyingseveralsetsofalternatives9calledindifferencesets(surfaces)9and
assigningadegreeofutilitytoeachsurface.Eachindifferencesetconsists
ofthealternativesthatthenegotiatorconsiderstobeequallygood.Thedegree
ofutilityassignedtothesurfaceischosenfromalinguistic(verbal)scale[see
Yevseyevaetal.2008].Thescaleisbuildontwolevels.Thefirst-levelscale
consistsofsevenverbalterms.First9thenegotiatorassignstotheindifference
setalevelfromthisscale.Thesecond-levelscaleallowsforstatingprecisely
thedegreeofutility;namelybychoosingadegreebetweentwoneighboring
termsfromthefirstscale.Thesecondscaleconsistsalsoofsevenverbalterms
andleadstoanincreaseintheprecisionoftheutilityspecification.Each
linguisticutilitylevelhasitsnumericequivalentusedduringthescoring
procedure.However9suchsetsconsistingofalternativesrepresenting
aparticularlevelofutilitymaynotbesufficientforderivingafullscoring
systemofthenegotiationoffers.Thereareprobablyotheralternativesthatmay
alsobelongtothissurface9thatwerenotspecifiedbythenegotiatorsinthe
preferenceelicitationstagebutcouldeasilybebuiltintheactualnegotiation
phasebychangingproportionallytheresolutionlevelsofthesubsequent
negotiationissues(makingimplicitlytrade-offsbetweenthenegotiationissues).
Initiallythenegotiatorsmaynothavespecifiedallthesalientalternativesfor
aparticularindifferencesetbecauseoflackoftime9hasteorsimplybecause
theysubjectivelyfeltthatacertainalternativeisnotimportant(conveysno
importantinformation)inthedefinitionofthisindifferencesurface.Therefore
weneedtorememberthatthealternativesthatcomprisetheindifference
surfacesareonlyexamplesofaparticularutility.Therearemanyother
alternatives(especiallyinthecontinuousnegotiationproblems)thatmayalso
belongtoeachofthesesets.However9thedegreeofbelongingtoasurfacemay
bepartialsinceforalternativesnotclassifieddirectlybythenegotiatorwemay
