devotedtoLeoKestenberg.TheeditorofthispartisFriedhelmBrusniak.
Thefirstpartisopenedbythreepapersdealingwithhistoricalissues,show-
ingideasunderlyingmusicpedagogyinabroaderculturalcontextduringthe
periodoftheSecondPolishRepublic(1918-1939)andpartlyalsoaftertheSec-
ondWorldWar.
AndrzejMichalski,inhisoverviewpaper,focusesontheassumptionsofmu-
sicpedagogyduringthatperiod,constitutinganimportantideologicalandthe-
oreticalreferencebaseforthisdisciplinefromahistoricalperspective.Thearea
isshownhereasanevolutionaryprocess,accompaniedbysocialandpolitical
changes,aswellasstronglyaffectedbyphilosophicalandculturalthought,sat-
uratedwithelementsofaesthetics,ethicsandeducationalelements.Musicped-
agogyintheauthor’sviewdoesnotexistinisolationfromeducationalide-
als,theawarenessofwhichhasbeensharedbyallthosewhohavecreatedthis
disciplineinPolandsincetheinterwarperioduntilcontemporarytimes.
Theeducationalvalues,beingamongthemostimportantfoundationsofthe
worksofphilosopherandteacherSergeiHessen,werenotedinapaperau-
thoredandpresentedbyViolettaPrzerembska.Thewritingsofthiseminentfig-
ure,whoalsoworkedformanyyearsinPoland,followeduponaclassical
themeofthephilosophyofculture,namelyhumanspirituality.Thisscope,
whichintheviewsofmanyauthorsbelongingtothistrend,affectseducation
processesthatshouldbeunderstoodasco-participationinculturalgoodsand
self-fulfilmentinpersonaldevelopment.S.Hessenundertookamultifacetedin-
terpretationofart,whichprovidesaspectrumofaxiologicalconditionsforhu-
mandevelopment.
JarosławChacińskihasundertakenacomparisonofpaperspresentedby
GermanandPolishauthorsfromtheinterwarperiod:LeoKestenberg,Eberhard
Preussner,StefanKazuro,TadeuszJoteyko,StefanWysockiandKarolSzyman-
owski.TheauthornotesthedifferencesandsimilaritiesthatexistedinGermany
andPolandincreatingthefoundationsformusicallifeandmusiceducation.
Althoughthesocialandpoliticalsituationinbothcountries,aswellasthesocial
andpoliticalchangesthatweretakingplacetherein,weredifferent,thesamein-
tensiveeffortscouldbeobserved,aimedatcreatingprofessionalmusicalinstitu-
tionsandmusiceducationsystemsensuringthecultivationoftheessentialval-
