toKeyData(2012:8),53.8%ofFLteachersparticipatingintheEuropean
SurveyonLanguageCompetencesreportedstayingmorethanonemonth
forthepurposeofstudyoracourseinacountrywherethelanguagethey
teachisspoken.However,therearegreatvariationsbetweencountries(79.7%
ofSpanishteachersversusonly11%Estonianteachers).Terefore,thereis
aneedtoincreaseaccessibilityofstateandEUCPDprogramsandgrants.
Anotherissueofconcernistheunenthusiasticattitudeofheadmasters
towardstheself-developmentoflanguageteachers.InDecember2013
theModernLanguagesAssociationofPolandopeneduparegionalbranch
inLowerSilesia.Temainmissionofthisnewbranchwastoattractlanguage
teacherstofreeworkshopsorganisedbyprofessionalsintheTEFLfield
inPolandandabroad,oferingthemaplacewheretheycouldexchange
ideasaswellasgaincertificatesofattendancewhichtheycouldusewhile
applyingforpromotion.Eachworkshopparticipantcouldsubmitaform
onlineandbecomeamemberofthenewassociation.Teinitiativewas
advertisedlocallyin123schools.Toughthefirsttwoworkshopswere
attendedbymorethan80participantsincluding21teachers,othersdid
notattracttheattentionofmanylanguageteachers.Interestinglyenough,
80%oftheteacherswerefromsmalltownsandruralareas.Inanonline
surveytheyevaluatedtheworkshopshighlyandexpressedaneedtotake
partinotherCPDcourses.Teyalsolistedvariousreasonswhytheywerenot
abletoattendmoretrainingduringthesameschoolyear,amongthembeing
oneheadmaster)slackofconsentforCPDtrainingbecauseoftheexpense
oflanguageclassesandthelackoffundsforcommutingtoCPDcourses.
Teteachersalsodeclaredthattheydidnotfeelmotivatedtoself-develop
oncetheywerepromotedatschool.Itseems,therefore,thatanenhancement
systemintheformofadditionalallowancesfortrainingandevenasmall
increaseinsalariesforparticipationinCPDcourseswouldbemotivating.
Anotherincentivetoattractmorepeopletotheteachingprofessioncould
beareductionofteachinghourstowardstheendofateacher)scareer.Tis
solutionisnotawidespreadpracticeacrossEuropeancountries.InGermany
