ofinductionanditsorganizationvaryacrossthememberstates.InsomeEU
countries,inductionistargetedatnewteachersafercompletionofinitial
teachereducation,attainmentoftherelevantqualification(adegree)and
therelevantlicenceorpermissiontoteach.Inothercountries,induction
isonlyforteacherswhohavetherequiredqualificationbutdidnotobtain
alicencetoteach.Suchteachersarecalled‘candidate)or‘probationary)teach-
ersor‘trainees)
.Intheircase,theinductionstagemayendwithaformal
examaimedatassessingtheirteachingskillsandadecisionabouttheirentry
intotheprofession.Terearealsocountriesinwhichtheinductionphase
isundertakenbyunqualifiedteacherswhodonothavealicensetoteach
(EuropeanCommission2010:10).
IntheUKtheinductionphasegenerallytakesoneyeartocompletefull
timeortwoyearsparttime.Togainqualifedteacherstatus(QTS)prospec-
tivelanguageteachersneedrsttoparticipateininitialteachertraining
(ITT).Traineesneedtospend18-24weeksinaschooliftheywanttoteach
attheprimaryorsecondarylevel.CompletingthewholeoftheITTcourse
andmeetingthestandardsallowsatraineetobeawardedQTS,whichmeans
theyarethenreadytoundertaketheinductionyearandbecomeanewly
qualifiedteacher(NQT).Qualifiedlanguageteachersusuallyconsiderdoing
apostgraduatecertificateineducation(PGCE).TePGCEstagefocuseson
developingpracticallanguageteachingskills.Duringthisoneortwo-year
periodPGCEparticipantsworkintheclassroomandearnasalary.
2.3.Continuingprofessionaleducationoflanguageteachers
Continuingprofessionaleducation(CPE)alsoknownascontinuingprofes-
sionaldevelopment(CPD)referstothemeansbywhichlanguageteachers
maintaintheirknowledgeandskillsrelatedtotheirprofessionallives(Evans
2002:124).LanguageteachersneedCPDtondsomefreshinspiration,
tocatchupwithnewideasinFLT
,togainexpertiseinteachingvariousgroups
(e.g.SENoryounglearners),andtoimprovetheirlanguageskills.According
toKeithHarding(2009),CPDisanessentialcomponentofprofessional
